Three face charges in weekend arson

Three men have been charged with setting a fire that caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to city property over the weekend. Samuel A. Monteleone, 18, Austin L. Melchior, 19, and Jeffrey P. Brown, who turned 21 Monday, each faces charges of second-degree arson and second-degree burglary. All three list their most recent addresses as the 700 block of St. Louis Avenue; they are currently incarcerated on a bond of $200,000 each.

Rx burglaries lead to arrests

Two Excelsior Springs teenagers have been accused of breaking into a local drugstore and stealing cash, stamps and nearly 2,000 prescription pills.
Christopher K. Wetzel and Zachary T. Coursen, both 17, were arrested for the crime, which occurred early Saturday. Wetzel faces two counts of second-degree burglary; Coursen has been charged with one count of second-degree burglary and one count of possession of a controlled substance. Coursen is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 29, while Wetzel is in jail on a $50,000 bond.
According to a statement of probable cause filed by the Excelsior Springs Police Department, officers responded to Brown1s Prescription Drugs, located in the 100 block of Crown Hill Road, at just before 5:30 a.m. Saturday, on a report of an intrusion alarm. The front door of the store had been broken, and after the pharmacist responded to the scene it was discovered that 1,900 tablets of diazepam, along with currency and postage stamps, had been taken.
